HOW TO: Dress Up 60’s
I get loads of questions asking what to wear to sixties themed events. I made this set of a few key items that are easy to get a hold of!
Your first stop in finding these items should be your local thrift store. They are the most authentic and definitely the least expensive. It can sometimes be tricky to find exactly what you’re looking for though, especially in a short period of time. In that case, stores such as H&M or Forever 21 usually have great retro style pieces.
The Dress
Your main piece is the a-line mini dress. It can be patterned or solid, colorful or black. I find it quite easy to find these at thrift shops although finding the right one can be tricky. Add a belt around your waist for something extra! This is also a good trick for making the dress more fitted if it’s thrifted and a few sizes too big.
The Legs
I chose to show knee high stockings since it’s a simple way to mimick the go-go boot style without spending a fortune on boots. This is something that was seen in sixties fashion a lot. If your dress isn’t patterned, you may also want to look for patterned or colorful tights.
The Feet
You can choose to pair your stockings with plain white shoes if you want the look to be more streamlined, but I chose black mary jane shoes. Bonus points for the kitten heel like the ones pictured above! Either flats or a low heel will do.
The Head
Bold, big earrings and a cute headband to crown big, big hair. One thing most all hairstyles had in common in the 60’s was
VOLUME. Since makeup will be a whole separate post at a later date, here is a youtube tutorial I found useful:
